Travelling is good for the soul. Anyone who has ever caught the travel-bug will agree. Whether it’s an excuse to escape, a desire for new adventures or a search for solitude, there are so many reasons to pack your bags and pick a destination!
Travel broadens your horizons. Spending time in countries and amongst cultures that are different from your own opens your eyes. Human beings, who are just like you, can and do live in completely different environments. It can be thrilling to experience it: learn their customs, eat their food, practice their language – get involved!
Discover who you are. Getting lost will help you discover yourself. My most profound self-discoveries have happened in the most random of places – a laundromat in the hills of Positano; frozen to a bench in a park in Madrid.
Develop skills you never knew you had. Sometimes while abroad the unexpected can happen. Being pushed out of your comfort zone, whether it’s a language barrier, getting directions, or feeling ill in a foreign land, will show you how resilient and adaptable you really are.
Gain a new perspective. Before you judge someone you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you judge them, you are a mile away. And you have their shoes. I’m kidding! Immersing yourself in another culture, language or lifestyle will illustrate the differences between your life and the lives of others – something I know I can sometimes take for granted.
Travel is the ultimate inspiration. With so much natural beauty in this world it’s almost impossible not to be impacted by it. Experiencing new and different locations ignites a part of you that makes you feel more alive, and more connected to the world you live in.
Feel a sense of accomplishment. It’s easy to feel unmotivated or that life is boring or uneventful. There is one simple cure for that: travel. Go somewhere, anywhere, and know that if nothing else, you have experienced something magical. Be warned though, once you start it is difficult to stop!
Create your own adventure. Whether it’s trekking the Inca trail, soaking up the sun on a beach in Bali or losing yourself amongst the ruins of Pompeii, style your own adventure to suit your passions. There is no right or wrong, travel is the only thing you buy that makes you rich.
Travel is the best teacher. The best way to learn about the world is to live in it. Expose yourself to new and exciting languages; take a cooking class in Italy; learn to surf in Hawaii. Experience the wonders of this world and become a better version of yourself.
Build your self-confidence. You have no idea how truly brave and resilient and confident in your abilities you are until you are confronted by an environment that is different to the one you know. Travelling reminds you of your strengths and of how amazing you really are.
Connect with kindred spirits. Travelling is a great way to meet people from all walks of life who share the same passions as you. You’ll find them at the table next to you in Venice, on the train to Naples, at the airport in Dubai. Share your stories, your travel tips and make memories!
Remember, the journey is the reward!
